European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany.
It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in
physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse
scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide
range of experimental techniques.
As of September 2026, we are offering a position in our student laboratory Xcool Lab for a
Position for a Voluntary Year (FSJ) with a focus on biology (f/m/d)
The Position
Work in a dynamic team! Together we will get young people excited about science and research.
- Work as a tutor in the Xcool Lab in close cooperation with the teaching and support staff
- Preparing experiments before the start of an Xcool Lab course
- Teaching, supervising and supporting students in carrying out practical laboratory experiments, especially in the field of biology
- Assisting with summarizing and discussing experimental results
- Ensuring a safe working environment for students under the supervision of the responsible Xcool Lab staff
- New and further development of materials and experiments
- Assistance at the information stand in the "Lighthouse" visitor center
- Support in public relations work, events and similar activities
- Supporting the web and social media presence
- Assistance with advertising
- Assistance with the evaluation of e.g. Xcool Lab courses and visits
Requirements
- Interest in natural sciences, especially biology
- Interest and experience in molecular biology is an advantage
- Enjoy working with young people
- Communication and organizational skills, ability to work in a team
- Independence and a sense of responsibility
- IT skills (MS Office)
- Fluency in the German language
- Knowledge of English is an advantage
