European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

For our Data Analysis group we are looking for an

Scientist for scientific data analysis (f/m/d)

The Position
  • Collaborate closely with instrument scientists and users throughout the lifeclycle of their experiments, particularly those involving attosecond X-ray pulses.
  • Gather and analyze requirements related to users' data analysis needs.
  • Translate these requirements into robust code to extract scientific information in both online and offline settings.
  • Research and develop methods to assess and continuously improve the qualityof scientific data.
  • Take a major role in the development and enhancement of existing data analysis tools and libraries, with specific focus on DAMNIT, EXtra and EXtra-metro.
Requirements
  • PhD in Natural Sciences or a related field.
  • Deep knowledge of scientific applications at X-ray free-electron lasers, specifically including hands-on experience with attosecond hard-X-ray pulses and nonlinear processes.
  • Demonstrated experience performing experiments at X-ray free-electron lasers.
  • Strong track record of developing Python applications and tools to process experimental data within a scientific context.
  • Proficiency with Git or similar version control systems.
  • Experience with the European XFEL’s data processing stack.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Good command of English (working language is English).

The following are considered as assets:
  • Experience with data analysis at other X-ray free-electron laser sources.
  • Familiarity with European XFEL’s scientific instruments.
