European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

For our HED instrument we are looking for an

PhD Student (f/m/d) for Warm Dense Matter X-ray spectroscopy - part-time (29,25 hrs/week)

The Position
  • Carry out the PhD research project “High resolution measurements of the electronic response of materials in Warm Dense Matter” at the HED instrument
  • Plan, prepare, and perform x-ray heating experiments, and shock-compression experiments using the DiPOLE laser system
  • Acquire, analyse, and interpret experiment data, combining spectroscopy and diffraction with theoretical models and simulations
  • Present results at international conferences and workshops, and publish in peer-reviewed journals
  • Actively participate in the collaborative research environment at HED, including interaction with external user groups and research consortia
  • Successfully complete and defend a doctoral thesis within the project duration
Requirements
  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, or a related field, preferably with a background in experimental plasma physics, atomic physics, x-ray techniques or related areas
  • Prior experience with experimental methods in x-ray optics, spectroscopy, or plasma physics is advantageous
  • Strong interest in HED physics and motivation to work in large-scale international research collaborations
  • Basic programming and data analysis skills; familiarity with python is beneficial
  • Good communication skills and proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Readiness to participate in experimental experiments, including shift work
