Enlightening Science
European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

For our HED instrument we are looking for an

PhD Student (f/m/d) - part-time (29,25 hrs/week)

  • Plan, prepare, and perform laser–XFEL pump–probe experiments with the high-intensity ReLaX laser system, including target design and diagnostic development.
  • Acquire, analyze, and interpret experimental data, combining X-ray resonant probing, interferometric imaging, and spectroscopy with theoretical models and simulation benchmarks
  • Present results at international conferences and workshops, and publish in peer-reviewed journals
  • Actively participate in the collaborative research environment at HED/EuXFEL, including interaction with external user groups and research consortia
  • Complete and defend doctoral thesis
Requirements
  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics, preferably with a background in experimental plasma physics, laser–matter interaction, or related areas
  • Initial experience with experimental methods in optics, lasers, spectroscopy, or X-ray techniques is considered an asset
  • Strong interest in high-energy-density physics and motivation to work in large-scale international research collaborations
  • Basic programming or data analysis skills; familiarity with numerical modeling or plasma simulations is beneficial
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a multidisciplinary, international team.
  • Good communication skills and proficiency in written and spoken English
